Green Building Conference and Exhibition 2012

In the aftermath of COP17, where the built environment was again acknowledged as a primary contributor to climate change and a hot spot for accessing mitigation opportunities, but also as a hot spot for adaptive interventions which will be fundamental to creating more climate resilient cities and communities into the future, and after 6 years of advocacy and knowledge sharing it is now fair to ask: why has green building not become standard practice for new buildings and refurbishments in South Africa?

The Green Building Conference 2012 will endeavour to answer this question, by firstly presenting the results of a survey of building projects to ascertain the state of the market, together with a critique of current policy, regulation and mechanisms in South Africa.

Secondly the conference will showcase global leadership and successful policy frameworks and thirdly seek to create a consensus based series of recommendations, which if implemented could have the effect of fast tracking the goal of a broad based up-take and application of green building principals in South Africa.

You are invited to attend this facilitated conference which could emerge as watershed Green Building Conference, and to contribute to the outcomes expressed above.

Join South Africa’s leading property investors, owners and operators, as well as designers, specifiers, builders, suppliers and managers as we grapple with this central and critical question.

Green Building 2012 will again feature several innovations in its programme and market offerings:

The programme will be separated into clearly defined ½ day modules, each featuring international and local experts and concluding with a facilitated panel discussion with the speakers from that module.

Modules are structured so as to be attractive to all stakeholders, but will allow people to choose not to attend all sessions without losing any coherence, and CPD credits will alsobe structured accordingly.

Modules proposed for 2012:

Module 1

Designing for Climate Resilience at the urban scale
(This module features leading thought and practice on the design of urban areas that enable communities to live sustainably in the holistic sense)

Module 2

Research and Innovation in materials and technologies
(This module is presented by the CSIR and features the work of leading researchers and scientists within the built environment fields from SA and abroad and covers design, construction methods, and materials)

Module 3

World and SA leading green building design
(This module features cutting edge design from SA and abroad, with case study based presentations from practitioners)

Module 4

Design charrettes:
1 Small House
2 Class room
3 Small factory
(This module features three parallel facilitated panel lead sessions involving speakers and experts in attendance and in which the group jointly workshops all considerations relevant to the design of the specific building type in question – the objective being to move from a general understanding to the implementation of principals espoused)
