Day 1 - Thursday 29th April

Speaker: Minister of Public Works - Mr Geoff Diodge
Topic: “Opening of Conference”

Geoff Doidge is the South African Minister of Public Works. He has been a member of parliament for sixteen years and has served on various parliamentary committees before becoming the Minister of Public Works in 2008.

Speaker : Mr Peter Brown
Topic: “Architechtural Technology and Sustainable Buildings”

Peter Brown is the current President of the South African Institute of Architectural Technologist. He is committed to ensuring that the Built Environment has within its ranks highly skilled technology specialists to meet the needs of this technology driven age in which we live. high on his priorities is to ensure that the profession is continually au fait with current or pending legislation.

Speaker: Mr Ryan Gravel
Topic: “Tightening our Belt – Sustainable City Strategies from Atlanta’s Beltline”

Ryan Gravel was the original visionary for the Beltline project in Atlanta – a transformative project that combines transit, parks and trails to generate economic growth along a 35 kilometer loop around the central city. Gravel is now at Perkins+Will, which is leading the design effort for the project’s implementation.

Speaker: Mr Llewellyn van Wyk
Topic: “Applying Green Building principles to Subsidy Housing: A case study”

Llewellyn van Wyk is a Research Group Leader at the CSIR and the editor-at-large of the Green Building Handbook. Van Wyk is an expert on the construction sector, especially in the fields of sustainable building and construction activities, skills development, and advanced construction technologies. He is on the board of the Green Building Council of South Africa.

Speaker: Dr. Dirk Funhoff
Topic: “Sustainable Building? Materials, Innovations and Challenges “

Dirk Funhoff is the head of the Construction Network Team for BASF in Europe. He joined BASF in 1988 to work on light-sensitive polymers and their application. Following his work in global marketing for (new) chemicals targeted towards industrial applications he took over his current responsibility in 2004 to lead the construction network team of BASF in Europe.

Day 2 - Friday 30th April

Speaker: Ms Michelle Garforth-Venter
Topic: “Building a Bio-Climatic Home”

Michelle Garforth-Venter has had a successful career in environmental media and is currently co-hosting the reality television show “Love and Mortar” with her husband. The documentary series follows them as they work towards constructing their bio-climatic home. The show aims to educate viewers about alternative building choices.

Speaker: Dr Ken Yeang
Topic: “Green Design & Planning”

Dr. Ken Yeang is an architect-planner, ecologist and author who is best known for his signature and innovative green buildings and masterplans. He is regarded as one of the foremost designers and noted authority on ecologically-responsive architecture and planning. He has pioneered the passive low-energy design of tall buildings, which he calls the 'bioclimatic skyscraper'. He has received numerous awards for his work and designs that include the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, RAIA International Award, Prinz Claus Award, UIA August Perret Award.

Speaker: Dr. Sydney Parsons
Topic: “Improving Indoor Environmental Health”

Dr Sidney Parsons is an international expert in energy management of buildings specialising in indoor environmental control for building-related illnesses. He is a senior researcher at the CSIR and received an award from it, in conjunction with Murray and Roberts. The JD Roberts Award was given to Dr Parsons in 2007 in recognition of his groundbreaking research into the crucial role of architectural engineering processes in improving the design of healthcare facilities.

Speaker: Mr Christoph Ingenhoven
Topic: "The Future is green"

Christoph Ingenhoven is a German architect who founded Ingenhoven Architects in 1985. This architecture firm has won numerous awards including 35 first prizes in international competitions and about 60 awards for realised projects and their ecological and sustainable approach. Ingenhoven has also been involved in many competitions as a jury member, expert consultant and judge, and has lectured worldwide.
