ENERGY EFFICIENCY FORUM FOR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS IN CAPE TOWN

Electricity tariffs are rising steeply, there is a medium-term national power shortage and large power users need to address their negative impact on the environment. In Cape Town, commercial buildings use about 40% of electricity and are responsible for about 28% of carbon emissions. To help people take action the City of Cape Town, Eskom and the South African Property Owners' Association (SAPOA) launched an Energy Efficiency Forum for Commercial Buildings in 2009. It is also co-funded by Santam, and Old Mutual.

The Energy Efficiency Forum provides owners and managers of offices, shopping centres, hotels and other commercial and public buildings with practical knowledge on energy efficiency solutions, and serves as a platform for collective action and shared learning. Regular Forum meetings offer case studies of energy efficiency retrofits and updates on financing options, policy issues and training opportunities. Innovations like ‘Green Leasing’ are also explored, to find ways of increasing energy efficiency action.

For more information and to register through the Forum website, property owners and managers can go to: www.capetown.gov.za/EnergyForum.
