Company Profile
Swartland produces a wide range of wooden doors and windows and boasts a track record of 3 generations of commitment to quality of product, delivery of service and industry innovation. The company’s awareness of environmental issues awarded the company the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certificate in 1998.
Swartland will not only give your home a natural charm but will provide excellent insulation, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This will save you the money you would otherwise have spent on heating and cooling by reducing the amount of energy the house uses. As a construction material wood is four times more efficient as an insulator than an equivalent thickness of cinder block (concrete and coal), six times more efficient than brick and fifteen times more efficient than concrete. Wood is naturally accustomed to dealing with environmental hazards and so it has a high tolerance for extreme heat or cold and copes well in harsh environments.
It takes three hundred times the amount of energy needed to produce a cubic metre of aluminium than it does to produce a similar amount of treated wood. There is also a huge discrepancy in the amount of carbon emitted during the manufacture of these materials. It takes a relatively small amount of energy to turn wood into a window or door and compared to concrete, steel or aluminium, the manufacture of wood gives off far fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Wood’s ability to be re-used and the fact that it is bio-degradable make it an ecofriendly choice. The low embodied energy that goes into producing wooden products further enhances its sustainable nature.
Swartland uses Okoumé, a hardwood from Gabon in West Africa, chosen for its quality, and colour consistency . This fast growing tree is preferably sourced from responsible logging programs that ensure sustainable practices. The use of the wood is strictly controlled and regrowth and replanting process is managed by responsible logging programs. As more wood is used, more trees are planted, making the use of Okoumé wood from these forests a sustainable choice. Commercial forestation such as this provides an environmental choice which does not pollute the air, require mining or milling, or cause any irreversible environmental harm.
All the wood is kiln dried to 8% moisture content which is ideal for the South African climate.
This keeps the wood in perfect balance with atmospheric conditions, thereby minimising any movement or warping. All hardwood products of which the internal components comprise of various species, are laminated for added strength and specifically designed to take on all South African climate conditions.
All Swartland manufacturing plants have been awarded the International Quality Management System, ISO 9001:2000 as certified by the South African Bureau of Standards.
There is a lifetime guarantee on all products .The guarantee covers not only craftsmanship but also the kiln dried timber itself. As well as having a wide variety of products, Swartland also offers custom made products so that you can specify the door or window that best suits your home.
The beautiful doors and windows manufactured by Swartland are not only durable and beautiful but are produced using eco-friendly and sustainable policies and practices that preserve our environment.
